Not that long ago, I had no idea that canine anxiety existed. When my dog Ronnie walked into my life four years ago, that all changed very quickly as I entered into a crash course of navigating this incredibly difficult condition alongside him. Determined to help him, we found ourselves diving right into the regular course of action of behavioural training and medications. But within this framework, we were coming up short—in our case the medications were not achieving the intended outcome and came with side effects outweighing the benefits. And without that extra support the training felt like we were pushing a boulder up a steep hill. Of course it was never going to be an easy journey but it felt too hard, something didn’t feel right and I couldn’t help but think we were missing something. The why. Having been on my own journey of mysterious chronic illness for many years (with anxiety being a big part of the picture), it was all too familiar of a feeling. Looking for answers and coming up short. Luckily at this point I had found the answers for myself and my health was improving in miraculous ways. For me, the why was everything, and it was only when I came across the Medical Medium book series by Anthony William that I discovered answers that resonated so deeply.
As I started to learn more for myself, it finally clicked that there were answers for Ronnie too. I learned that for a chronic anxiety condition to exist, there has to be a physical vulnerability present, including neurotoxic exposures like toxic heavy metals, pathogens and/or other toxic chemical exposures. And not only was there a why but there was a how—a roadmap of how to heal with a specific and targeted nutritional approach. As I started to apply these healing tools to Ronnie’s diet, I started to see subtle but promising shifts that were enough for me to know that yes, we were finally on the right path. Even though we still had a journey ahead of us, the heaviness of the mystery unknown dissipated and was filled with lightness, inspiration and hope. Along the way, Ronnie’s littermate Mulan found her way to us with similar anxiety challenges and it became very clear that these two special dogs are here with big purpose—one of those being to teach a masterclass of chronic anxiety recovery. And it is my honor to be able to pass those teachings on to other anxious dog guardians and safekeepers. I know how heavy, challenging, and even hopeless this journey can feel but I’m here to tell you there is a way forward and a calmer and more peaceful version of life ahead.
